Monthly meetings
The main educational activity of Eccolov is our monthly meeting. These are designed to keep an ongoing focus on the values of the Earth Charter. Each speaker, film or discussion highlights an aspect of one or more of the core values promoted in the Charter. Meetings take place on second Sundays, at 2 pm, and are usually held either at THE GRANGE HALL, 499 Town Street, Moodus, in the winter or, during the summer, at the large Yurt within the grounds of The Sanctuary at Shepardfields, 59 Bogel Road, East Haddam, where we rent the meeting space and help maintain its beautiful 45 acres of meadow and woodland.
Hands-on work
The Sanctuary grounds hold some of our ongoing hands-on projects such as the organic community garden, in which interested gardeners come together to raise natural, organic crops of their choices. We were instrumental in creating the magnificent granite “Peace Circle”, which is suitable for weddings, meditations, music or poetry readings, reading, intimate theater in the round, or just sitting and enjoying the lovely surroundings. Additionally, there is also a large and beautiful labyrinth on the property that can be used for traditional meditation, or to experience the immensity of Creation’s time line by walking it as our ‘Cosmic Walk’. Picking up a brochure upon entering makes either use self-explanatory.
Finally, we helped create the nature trails that access a scenic double pond setting and a stream. In all, we have thoroughly enjoyed assisting in the development of the site as an ideal location for individual or group retreat days, or as a refuge to get away to, even momentarily.
(Eccolov and the Sanctuary are separate 501(c)(3) organizations that frequently work together for common causes such as are common to the Earth Charter).
